What's your elevator pitch?

Learn how to effectively introduce yourself in one brief sentence

“So, what do you do?”

How often do you get that question?

If you’re trying to grow your business, hopefully you’re getting this question fairly often.

Answering it succinctly is a skill in itself. The goal is that the person you just met walks away with a clear understanding of what you do.

Let’s start building your elevator pitch…

While we’re not in elevators nearly as much as we used to be, the term elevator pitch still holds value. The idea behind it is that if you run into a top prospect in an elevator and you only have 30 seconds to introduce yourself, how do you do that succinctly and effectively?

There are 3 elements to an effective elevator pitch:

  1. Who you help

  2. What do you help them do

  3. How you help them do that (ideally uniquely!)

Let’s dive into each one:

Who you help

Being able to clearly paint a picture of your ideal customer is essential. The old adage of being everything for everyone never bodes well!

So, if you don’t already have a specific customer profile in mind, here’s a few questions to get you thinking:

  • Is there a certain age range, gender, or perhaps location?

  • In the B2B space, does your ideal company have a certain revenue size, employee count, certain industry, maybe funding stage, etc.

The more you can picture your ideal customer, the better. In a future post, I’ll share how I build out my personas.

What you help them do

Pretty straight-forward right? What do you do?! Do you sell a certain product or service? Whatever you sell, there is a desired outcome that buyers are looking for from that product or service. Keeping that in mind is helpful as well. As I’ve said before, what is the need behind the need? People aren’t just buying a house, they buying a place to raise their family, etc.

How you help them

Ideally this is unique to you. Do you have a proven process or a special way you do business that helps you deliver your product or service?

Now, let’s put it all together…

I help (who) (do what) (how).

I’ll use mine as an example. I just need you to reply and tell me what you think! Even a quick thumbs up or down will be incredibly helpful 😉

As a former agency CEO and marketing executive for over 20 years, I now help founders and small business owners build sustainable marketing strategies and systems that help them grow their business.
