Setting Simple Goals for the New Year
Get clarity on your goals and align your activities

Do you ever find yourself wondering… am I doing the right things to market my business? Am I spending my time on the right things? How long should I do this before I will see results? When should I pivot to something else?
In today’s post, I’ll walk through a simple process you can use to get clarity and align your activities to your goals. Alright, let’s get going…
Start with the end in mind
What is your long term goal and by long term, let’s say 1 year. And, as I always say, what is your need behind the need? This will help us get to your why.
For example, do you need to generate monthly recurring revenue (MRR) of X in order to leave your full time job?
Once you have your “why” that will guide you and keep you motivated when the going gets tough. And, it will get tough!
Action Item
1. Fill in the blank:
In [timeframe], I want to have [goal] so I can [your why].
Let’s look at an example: In 6 months, I want to have $10,000 in monthly billing/recurring revenue so that I can make my side hustle my full time job.
Now, let’s start to get more specific.
2. What is your primary offering?
If you offer more than one product or service, clarify what exactly you are selling to get to your goal.
If you have one service, say consulting, great then it’s as simple as that. You know your margin on that. If you offer a variety of products or services, here’s a few questions to help you determine your focus:
→ Where am I seeing success currently?
Now, it is important you can define what success looks like - if you are generating revenue but it’s not profitable or not in line with your vision/values, then we need to know that so you’re not creating a plan to generate revenue that will cause other issues.
→ Where are you seeing demand?
In an ideal world, you are selling something that people want, so lean into that instead of trying to create demand for something brand new, at least right now. Layering on a new product may be a future goal once you have your foundation built.
Now, let’s set some goals and make them actionable.
3. Who are your current best customers?
This might be as simple as taking a mental inventory or you may need to dive into your customer data. Look for commonalities, not just demographic, but ideally common pain points, challenges, problems, or triggers.
4. Now, make a list of target accounts/clients you want
Once you know who your best customers are, who are other ideal potential clients?
And if you know how many you need to talk to in order to make a sale, fantastic, if not, let’s set a goal.
So, there you have it. A simple exercise to help you get clarity and set some goals so you can then make sure your activities are in line with your vision.
To recap:
1. Fill in the blank → In [timeframe], I want to have [goal] so that I [your why].
2. What is your primary offering?
3. Who are your best customers?
4. Create a list of target customers.
