Simple Content Checklist

Simple checklist before publishing your content

Creating content can certainly be overwhelming, especially for founders and small business owners with limited resources.

In years past, running large content teams, I would keep a checklist for the team to help keep all our content on brand.

And if I was to boil it down to one simple question, it would be “Is this helpful?”

But in reality, it goes beyond that one question to ensure the content is helpful… and on brand.

I’m a strong advocate for brand.

Brand is about keeping your promise to your audience, to your customers, and being true to who you are.

Because, when you are true to yourself, you are consistent in how you talk, how you look, and how you make people feel.

And people take notice.

At least, subconsciously.

And all the interactions add up to your brand - and consistency builds credibility.

So, here’s how I approach content:

Is this content on brand?

Content/Copy:

What do I mean by that? Well, I like to look at it in terms of… Is this content in alignment with your:

  1. Mission

Your mission is your why; your purpose. Why you are in the business you’re in.

  2. Story

Even if there are tons of other businesses doing what you do, you are unique and have your very own story.

  3. Point of View

This, in my opinion, is critical. Surely you have beliefs, core values, strong opinions; So what is your point of view that would be shared in your content.

  4. Core Content Pillars

In order to have a cohesive content strategy, I believe having your core content pillars is critical. What are the few concepts you consistently talk about?

Visuals:

In addition to the actual content/copy, I also consider if the content on brand visually.

Simply ensure that the images follow the brand guidelines in terms of logo, colors, fonts and more.

There can be a lot of room to play around with variations of images, but the goal is that as folks are scrolling, your content becomes recognizable. Does it look and feel consistent and cohesive?

Hope that helps gives some perspective as you are creating your content. If you could, please take this quick poll and let me know a quick yes or no!

To recap, is this content in alignment with your:

1. Mission

2. Brand Story

3. POV (Point of View)

4. Core Content Pillars

5. Brand Guidelines - Visuals
